What do I think about drawing digital?
Share
Recently I spent some time, actually a lot of time, diving into digital tools for drawing. I did this before, but somehow never got the feeling of it. It's not that I am unfamiliar with digital stuff. I use Photoshop daily, but only to clean up my scanned drawings. Cleaning smudges, enhancing the colors, working on the layout and things like that.
I see a lot of artists using Procreate a lot, but that is a digital art making tool that is only for Ipads. I don't have an Ipad and am not really planning on buying one.
So I tried painting again with the brushes in Photoshop but like always it still has this artificial feeling to me. The result are always too computerlike to my taste.
Then I remembered that Adobe has Fresco, which maybe is comparable to Procreate. And wow, this felt really like a complete other world. Watercolor brushes act like they do on my aquarel paper, crayons are like real crayons and pens behave like pens do in real life. So I played along, feeling totally addicted for... two days. I made the thing you see above. I'm content with that one.
And then... I just wanted to get back to my real life paper and paints. Somehow there is nothing that beats that feeling of freedom for me. I love smudges and accidents on paper, which seem to happen a lot less when working digital.
Am I going tot do more digital art? Sure, but I guess it will always stay a little bit of a funny thing to do on the side. How about the other artists here? Do you have a preference for digital or for the real stuff? And why?
